Online Micro-Teaching Reflection

What went well during your online microteaching lesson?

The engagement throughout the online micro teaching between myself and the learners especially through a discussion on Slavery at the Cape which went well. The part that I thought went well was the example I used to help the learners relate to the topic using something that they went through such as Coronavirus restrictions and regulations and from the feedback I received from the learners, the example helped them understand and relate to the topic using coronavirus restrictions and lockdown.


What challenges or obstacles did you encounter, and how did you address them?

The problem I encountered at the end of the lesson was during the Kahoot! quiz as one learner had unstable connection to the Kahoot quiz. I handled it by informing the learner that they can join the quiz once they have a stable connection, and the learners did receive the link to the Kahoot! so they can also play the Kahoot solo. The learner did end up joining the Kahoot once their connection was stable.


Did your lesson meet the learning objectives you set out to achieve?

Yes, the lesson objectives were met throughout the discussion, inquiry based learning and the Kahoot was used to assess whether or not the objectives were met.


Did you choose appropriate ICT tools to teach your online lesson, explain why ?

I chose Kahoot! as an ICT tool for my online lesson because it’s highly engaging and fosters a game-based learning environment, which is ideal for keeping Grade 7 learners interested. In an online setting, where maintaining attention can be challenging, Kahoot! provides that interactive edge that keeps students motivated. It also gives instant feedback and creates a competitive yet fun atmosphere that encourages participation from every one, no matter their language proficiency. I find it adaptable, as I can use it for reviewing content, assessing understanding, or even introducing new concepts in a way that aligns well with my lesson objectives.


What did you learn from this experience that you can apply to the teaching of this lesson in the classroom?

I learned that interactive tools like Kahoot! can effectively teach challenging topics, such as slavery at the Cape. In an online setting, I saw how engagement increases when learners actively participate in a quiz or game format. In the classroom, I can apply this by using similar interactive strategies—like creating a quiz or discussion-based activity that focuses on key aspects of the topic, such as the lives of enslaved people, their contributions, and their resistance to slavery.

How did you incorporate peer, mentor, or student feedback into your lesson improvement process?

When teaching this lesson again based on the feedback from my peers, I can improve my lesson by incorporating more diverse perspectives in the lesson. That can be done by finding YouTube videos with diverse backgrounds. I believe I could have had better time management as I do believe I went over by 5 minutes with my online micro teaching lesson.
